This hands-on workshop will present simple and safe alternatives for demonstration of DNA extraction and gel electrophoresis in high school classrooms. Participants will learn the skills associated with micropipetting, extract DNA and prepare and load gels.
The workshop will showcase the ‘Biotech out of the Box’ program which supports the presentation of biotechnology in W.A. high school biology courses.

The workshop facilitator will demonstrate effective application techniques to create various realistic wounds and abrasions on a manikin using moulage and make-up products. Manikin work stations will allow attendees the hands-on practice of these techniques using the provided gelatin products, trauma make-up and Practoplast wounds. Details of the recommended products and applicators will be available during the workshop.

This workshop examines some laboratory-based examples of de-identified, real world incidents. By working together in small groups we will unpack some of the language typically used upon hearing of an injury and so challenge a few of the myths & preconceptions surrounding “operator error” specifically & Behaviour Based Safety generally.

This session, facilitated by Helen Alm, will outline 6 important and simple keys to making effective, memorable and enjoyable presentations. With appropriate preparation, planning and practice, and a determination to succeed, making effective presentations is a skill that most people can develop.
